The material used in making Flange Octagonal Gasket Ring

2025-05-30

Flange octagonal gasket rings, commonly known as ring type joint (RTJ) gaskets, are precision-engineered metallic sealing rings designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, especially in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries.

Common Materials Used in Octagonal RTJ Gasket Rings:

Soft Iron

Temperature Limit: Up to ~540°C (1000°F)

Applications: Non-corrosive environments

Characteristics: Low cost, good for mild conditions

Low Carbon Steel

Similar to soft iron but slightly stronger

Often used with protective plating (e.g., zinc)

Stainless Steel Grades:

304 (1.4301) and 316 (1.4401)

Good corrosion resistance

Used in mildly to moderately corrosive environments

316L (Low Carbon)

Better resistance to intergranular corrosion

321, 347, 410, 904L

Selected based on specific corrosion and temperature resistance needs

Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Enhanced strength and corrosion resistance

Used in offshore and sour service environments

Inconel (e.g., Inconel 625, 718)

Excellent resistance to high temperatures and corrosion

Used in extreme environments (e.g., high-temperature steam, chemical processing)

Monel (e.g., Monel 400)

Nickel-copper alloy

Excellent resistance to seawater and acids

Hastelloy

High corrosion resistance in chemical applications

Expensive but very durable

flange ring

Nickel and Nickel Alloys

Used where excellent corrosion resistance is needed in specific chemical media

Copper and Brass

Rarely used; only for very specific low-pressure, non-corrosive applications

Material Selection Depends On:

Pressure rating

Operating temperature

Media (corrosiveness, chemical compatibility)

Flange material (to avoid galvanic corrosion)
